Bert Römgens scored the 73rd shot in the Neusser contest
In a thrilling turn of events last year, Christoph Heusgen outshone Bert Römgens in a fierce competition, but this time around, Römgens secured victory at 7:01 PM with his 73rd shot, claiming the king of the birds' last remnants. The 58-year-old, beaming with joy, momentarily disregarded the wave of well-wishers and press figures to acknowledge his dedicated shooting team, the Grenadiers of the "Neuss Divergenten." Alongside him is his loving husband, Dionissios "Saki" Liampotis. This time, Römgens clinched the title, edging out contenders Klaus Ehren from the Grenadier Zug "Net kalle - donn" and Stephan Meier from the Tambour Corps "In Treue fest." Meier, who could have become the first drum major to earn the Neuss shooting crown if he'd succeeded in his attempts in 2021 and 2022, found himself coming up short again. Ehren, a first-timer at the bird stake, also fell short this year.
Fast forward to Saturday, August 31, when Römgens and the city's top rider will be crowned as the new shooting and riding champions, respectively, at the city hall. In honor of the riding champion, Walter Dickmann, and the newly crowned shooting king, Bert I. Römgens, both the Chargiertenzug and coronation procession will make their way through the city center's streets. The Chargiert Szeged procession commences at 6 PM, beginning on Michaelstraße and proceeding through Mühlenstraße, Windmühlengasse, Oberstraße, Peter-Wilhelm-Kallen-Straße, Michaelstraße (King's Residence), Hamtorstraße, Sebastianusstraße, Buchel, Markt to the Zeughaus. The coronation procession starts at 7:30 PM from the Zeughaus, traveling Markt, Oberstraße, Augustinusstraße to the city hall.
Nick Dorweiler (8) claimed the title of the Edelknabenkönig (Junior King) with the 74th shot. He's in the fourth grade at the Adolf-Clarenbach-Schule, and apart from his academic pursuits, he enjoys playing football. His brother Tim held the title before him. Their father, Carsten Dorweiler, serves as the first chairman of the Neuss Grenadier Corps.
Walter Dickmann (68) captured the title of High Riding Champion with the third ring in the fourth round, edging out his five competitors. Dickmann has been a legal professional in Neuss for 40 years. As for the artillery, Julian Brockers (22) from Grimlinghausen leads the way. His brother Jakob clinched the title for him in the traditional flat race. The winner is Ana Nilson. Brockers is currently studying Business Administration and serves as a student assistant at Teupe Bridge Construction. In his spare time, Julian enjoys playing football with passion.
In a separate context, Bert Römgens serves as an honorary guest and patron at a charitable event called the "ROYAL PARTY 05. APRIL 2025," which is organized by the group Schützen gegen Krebs (Marksmen Against Cancer). In this role, Römgens plays a key part in supporting the organization's mission to battle cancer through celebratory events and fundraising efforts[3].
In the upcoming city hall ceremony on Saturday, August 31, the city's top rider will be acknowledged as the new riding champion, while Bert I. Römgens, the victorious shooting king, will also be crowned. Römgens, who also supports the Schützen gegen Krebs (Marksmen Against Cancer) group as an honorary guest, might find some time to watch a game of football, a sport he enjoys alongside European leagues such as the champions-league and other sports.
