Bermúdez Requena, head of the criminal organization "La Barredora", touches down in Mexico at Tapachula Airport, Chiapas
Breaking News: Mexican Criminal Leader Hernán Bermúdez 'El Abuelo' Extradited from Paraguay
Paraguay has handed over one of Mexico's most wanted criminal targets, Hernán Bermúdez Requena, also known as 'El Abuelo' or 'El Munrra,' to Mexican authorities. The extradition came after a series of events that involved a detainment in Paraguay, a new travel route, and a stopover in Colombia.
Bermúdez, the former leader of the 'barredora,' a criminal group belonging to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was arrested last Saturday in a luxury residence in Mariano Roque Alonso. He was held in the cells of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD) in Asunción until his expulsion.
Initially, Bermúdez was to travel from Asunción to Cozumel, Quintana Roo, and then to the Toluca International Airport. However, the route changed, extending his stay in Colombia and altering his final destination. The reasons for the route change and the extended stopover in Colombia remain undisclosed.
The Federal Security Cabinet informed that as part of international cooperation, the government of Paraguay notified Mexico of its decision to expel Bermúdez. The agency reaffirmed that Paraguay has no refuge for transnational organized crime.
Upon his arrival at the Tapachula International Airport in Chiapas, Mexico, Bermúdez was met by a security operation awaiting his arrival. Around 9 am, a Rhino-type truck from the Federal Ministerial Police arrived at the Toluca International Airport, presumably to transfer Bermúdez to Federal Prison No. 1 in the Altiplano.
The National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD) of Paraguay referred to Bermúdez Requena as a Mexican capo linked to the CJNG. Bermúdez was reportedly linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
After his arrest and extradition, the responsibility for organizing 'La Barredora' was taken over by José Artemio Maldonado Mejía. Bermúdez served as the Secretary of Public Security of Tabasco and the leader of the criminal organization 'La Barredora' before his arrest.
A teleconference hearing with Judge Osmar Legal, the Specialized Judge in Organized Crime of Asunción, was held after Bermúdez's detainment in Paraguay. A video of Bermúdez's expulsion from Paraguay to Mexico is available.
As the extradition process unfolds, the Mexican authorities will continue to pursue justice in the ongoing fight against transnational organized crime. Stay tuned for further updates.
