Berlin's wild swing: From -18°C freeze to 18°C spring warmth in days

A sharp shift in weather today is on the way for Berlin and Brandenburg. Freezing temperatures will dominate until the end of February, with overnight lows plunging well below zero. By early March, however, a sudden warm spell will bring spring-like conditions and the first signs of pollen season.

The cold snap began on February 26, with daytime highs struggling between -3 and +3°C. Overnight, thermometers dropped further, recording -6 to -12°C in most areas. Where skies stayed clear, readings fell as low as -18°C.

February 27 saw a slight rise in daytime temperatures, reaching -2 to +4°C across the region. Western areas fared better, with highs of +5 to +7°C. That night, the chill returned, with lows between -4 and -11°C, dipping to -16°C under clear skies.

A noticeable thaw arrived on February 28. Daytime temperatures climbed to +1 to +7°C, while western regions enjoyed milder air at +8 to +10°C. Some spots even hit +13°C. Overnight, the contrast grew stark: the northwest stayed just above freezing at +3°C, while the southeast dropped to -9°C.

After February 28, the change became dramatic. On March 1, temperatures soared to around 13°C, setting off a warming trend. By Thursday, readings reached 16°C, and Friday brought sunny skies with highs of 18°C. The shift also triggered the first hazel and alder pollen, signalling the start of hay fever season. Clouds and rain followed on Saturday, ending the brief spell of sunshine.

The region moved from bitter cold to near-spring warmth in just days. Pollen counts began rising as temperatures today peaked, marking an early start to allergy season. The sudden weather today shift also brought rain by the weekend, replacing the unseasonable sunshine.
