Berlin's Späti Scene Revitalized: Brothers Transform Viktoriapark Kiosk into Youth Hub

Berlin's Späti scene has seen a significant decline over the past decade, with only around 1000 remaining. Despite this, the brothers Serdar and Emre have taken over the Späti at Viktoriapark in Berlin-Kreuzberg, offering a unique youth-oriented experience.

Serdar, who now runs the kiosk, took over three months ago. He has transformed the space, removing magazines and focusing on a youth-friendly stock. The kiosk also offers services like package acceptance and outdoor seating, fostering a community hub. This approach echoes the role of Spätis in Germany, which often replace traditional bars and promote social cohesion.

Meanwhile, Naciye has been running the 'Ballerbude' kiosk in Oer-Erkenschwick for a decade. Opening daily at 6 am, she provides a wide range of products, from coffee and beer to magazines and sweets. Her kiosk, like Serdar's, serves as a meeting point, offering a space for personal conversations and community engagement.

Despite the decline in Spätis, Serdar and Emre's kiosk at Viktoriapark demonstrates the continued importance of these small kiosks in Berlin's social fabric. Their unique approach caters to the youth, providing a space for community interaction and engagement.
