Berlin's recycling crisis worsens as bins overflow and complaints surge

Berlin has faced a growing problem with overfilled public recycling bins since 2025. Complaints surged by early 2026, with residents reporting illegal dumping and neglected containers across the city. The issue reached a critical point in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, where bins remained unemptied for weeks after New Year's Eve celebrations. The Berlin Senate described the conditions in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf as 'unacceptable' and forwarded complaints to the private operator responsible. Under Germany's Packaging Act, these companies must install, maintain, and empty glass recycling bins. Yet, in this district, a waste disposal firm failed to service the containers from New Year's Eve until mid-January.

The problem extended beyond one area. Overfilled bins and piles of illegally dumped waste—including household rubbish, bulky items, and old electronics—appeared near recycling points citywide. Another disposal company struggled with staff shortages at the end of 2025, operating with half the usual collection crew. In response, the Senate announced plans to expand glass recycling infrastructure, particularly in residential zones lacking collection points. Officials also backed a proposal requiring grocery retailers to host glass recycling bins on their premises.

The Senate continues to forward resident complaints to private operators managing Berlin's dual waste system. Expanding collection sites and involving retailers may ease pressure on existing bins. However, the delays in servicing and persistent illegal dumping highlight ongoing challenges in the city's recycling network.
