"We've had enough!" - Demonstration for alternative agricultural policy - Berlin’s massive protest demands urgent reform for sustainable farming
Thousands of demonstrators gathered at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on January 17, 2026, to protest against harmful farming practices. The rally, organized by the Wir haben es satt! alliance, brought together farmers, environmentalists, and animal welfare activists in a call for urgent change during the city’s annual Green Week event.
The protest saw around 25 tractors rolling through the capital, carrying banners with slogans like Family Farms, Not Agribusiness and Future-Proof Farming. Farmers and campaigners united under demands for stricter environmental protections and fairer conditions in agriculture.
The alliance, made up of roughly 60 groups—including Greenpeace, NABU, Oxfam, and Fridays for Future—accused the government of failing to act. They highlighted recent cuts to animal welfare funding and delays in introducing a mandatory livestock labelling system. Organizers also warned that weakened fertiliser rules now risk contaminating drinking water supplies. Criticism extended to broader policy decisions, with claims that development aid budgets had been slashed. Speakers at the event argued that the current coalition’s approach favours outdated industrial farming over sustainable alternatives.
The demonstration ended with calls for immediate reforms to protect both small-scale farmers and the environment. Protesters left with a clear message: without policy shifts, Germany’s agricultural future—and its commitments to climate and animal welfare—remain at risk.
