In Pursuit of False Waste Disposal Scammers - Berlin's Garbage Crew Exposes Waste Disposal Scams in New ARD Thriller
A new episode of The Three from the Garbage Crew will tackle illegal waste disposal scams in Berlin. The 14th film in the ARD Degeto series, titled Dirty Scam, blends action with pressing social issues. It premieres on Friday, March 27, at 8:15 PM on ARD, with early streaming from March 18 in the ARD Media Library.
The plot follows Captain Werner Träsch and his team as they hunt down criminals posing as waste inspectors. These fraudsters extort fines from seniors by falsely accusing them of improper bulky waste disposal. Träsch takes the case personally after the scammers target a law-abiding retiree he had previously advised.
Meanwhile, Specki gets a surprise visit from his niece, adding a personal touch to the investigation. Behind the scenes, director Christiane Balthasar and writer Silja Clemens shape the story, weaving in real-world problems. One subplot reflects automation's impact, as Träsch's daughter, Annika, loses her journalism job to AI. The film's themes mirror Berlin's growing struggle with illegal large-item dumping. Reports of abandoned furniture and electronics surged since 2020, peaking at over 25,000 cases in 2023. Rising disposal costs and frequent moves fuel the problem. Authorities have responded with stricter controls, fines up to €500,000, public awareness campaigns, and plans to expand recycling centres by 2026.
The episode will air on ARD on March 27, with streaming available from March 18. It highlights both fictional crime-solving and real challenges in waste management. The series continues to address social issues while delivering action-packed storytelling.
