In the pitch-black silence that enveloped the Champions League court, SC Magdeburg danced with joy, basking in their title victory, while the dejected Berlin's Füchse stood by, staring at their shattered dreams. The World Handballer of the Year, Mathias Gidsel, took responsibility, consoling his teammates amidst their disdain for their defeat.

The capital city's pride, the Füchse, missed out on the crown jewel of their incredible season, losing the Champions League final to SC Magdeburg. A week after winning their first German championship, the Füchse succumbed to SC Magdeburg in their maiden Champions League final, 26:32 (12:16). It marked their first defeat in a competitive match since February.

"From the start, they owned the game. They executed their strategy flawlessly," Gidsel admitted after the game. Yet, the Dane couldn't help but feel pride for their remarkable journey: "I won't stand here and be disheartened by our season. It was a remarkable adventure for our club."

A historic day for German handball - Michelmann

DHB President Andreas Michelmann declared it a "historic day" for German handball. "I congratulate both teams for their spectacular performances. The repeated triumph of SC Magdeburg is awe-inspiring, as coach Bennet Wiegert and his team never wavered in the face of adversity," he said.

The Berliners had entered the final as slight favorites after their gala performance in the semi-final against HBC Nantes (34:24). The fact that Füchse had not lost to Magdeburg in the last two Bundesliga matches and the Supercup further cemented their prospects.

Best season in the history of the Berlin club

However, in the first all-German Champions League final since 2014, SCM played with an air of confidence and emerged as the European handball champions for the third time (2002, 2023). Their thrilling semi-final victory against defending champions Barcelona (31:30) had given SCM an additional boost.

Goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez shone brighter than ever, recording 18 saves. Meanwhile, Gidsel, the Füchse's star player, managed only seven goals.

Despite a narrow lead over SCM in the Bundesliga, the Berliners looked back on the best season in their club's history. Coach Jaron Siewert's team had finally entered the absolute world elite.

Gidsel's struggles to find his groove

The Füchse found it difficult to break through SCM's tight defense. Their famed offensive power was barely noticeable. Only 12 goals in the first half spoke volumes about SCM's exceptional defensive performance.

Magdeburg dominated the game, almost flawlessly. Dejan Milosavljev lost the goalkeeper duel against Magdeburg's Hernandez, and Max Darj missed promising chances, while Lasse Andersson struggled with formidable attempts from the backcourt.

Hernandez swayed the balance

Berlin seemed rattled and tense. The grace that had carried them through the season seemed to disappear. Gidsel, initially, had little impact, only scoring three goals in the first half despite having an energy advantage from an early red card in their previous game.

After the break, Gidsel gradually found his rhythm, but SC Magdeburg held firm, extending their lead to six goals at 23:17. Hernandez continued to excel with highlight-worthy saves, making 11 by the 40-minute mark.

Ludwig stood tall at the Berlin gate, keeping the game within reach until the final ten minutes. The Berliners upped the ante, aiming for quick goals, and managed to close the gap to 24:27. Yet, the comeback remained elusive, even Mathias Gidsel's multiple attempts falling short.
