Let's dive into the buzz surrounding this year's Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Berlin. The queer rainbow network, traditionally a part of the Bundestag administration, has decided to sit this one out.

Why, you ask? Well, the director of the Bundestag has taken a stand. The administration, due to its obligation of neutrality, refrains from participating in political demos and public gatherings. A spokesperson confirmed this, stating, "The Bundestag administration... does not participate in political demonstrations and public assemblies."

While the CSD organizers, Berlin CSD e.V., had earlier announced the Rainbow Network's participation in 2023 and 2024, those plans have been scrapped following the administration's instruction. Sounds like a visible blow to queer visibility, doesn't it? The association's board lashed out, criticizing the move as a "[silent] revocation of the consensus that basic rights should be visibly defended."

The Berlin CSD is set for July 26th. Amidst right-wing extremist attacks targeting CSDs, support seems more crucial than ever. The association urges Bundestag President, Julia Klöckner, to publicly clarify the decision. Time's ticking, Julia!

The stir began back in May when it became known that Klöckner only intended to hoist the rainbow flag at the Reichstag building for the International Day against Homophobia (May 17) and not for the Berlin CSD anymore.

The first rainbow flag hoist at the Bundestag took place in 2022. This year, despite the CSD's reputation as a powerful street assembly, protest, and celebration, Klöckner announced there'd be no rainbow flag display.

CSD celebrations unfold in cities worldwide, paying homage to the uprisings of the queer community in Christopher Street, New York, in 1969. Its purpose lies in the visibility and equal rights of the queer community.
