Taking a Stance: Berlin SPD on the Middle East Conflict

Berlin's Social Democratic Party (SPD) should articulate their position on the Middle East disputes - Berlin Social Democratic Party (SPD) to formulate stance on Middle East dispute

So, the SPD's Mitte district branch in Berlin is hoping to stir some conversation about—you guessed it—the ongoing Middle East conflict. They've penned a motion for the state party conference on May 24, which gained attention from the "Berliner Morgenpost".

The motion dives right into the thick of things, mentioning the Hamas attack that occurred on October 7, 2023, claiming 1,200 lives and holding Israeli hostages still captive in Gaza. Yet, it doesn't stop there. It expresses concern for the plight of the Palestinian civilian population, laments the destruction in Gaza due to the war, and acknowledges the loss of "tens of thousands" of lives.

The SPD from Mitte demands a firm position

Max Landero, deputy district chairman, feels the SPD's stance on the Middle East conflict has been lacking clarity: "There's a void here," Landero said, in response to a dpa inquiry. "We're all about human rights-based policies, but we haven't shown a clear enough stance yet."

A debate at the district level has already taken place. Landero explains, "We've reached a balanced position in a thorough process where we sought input from Jewish and Palestinian voices." He's optimistic that they can tackle this debate at the state party conference in a fair manner, armed with solid arguments for their motion.

A clear stance on Israeli policies

"With this motion, we make our stance on Israel abundantly clear," Landero proclaimed. "Israel's right to exist and self-defense is non-negotiable for us, as long as it adheres to international law."

Simultaneously, the motion advocates for the Palestinians' right to self-determination, criticizes Israeli settlement policies in the West Bank, calls for a two-state solution, and urges the federal government to back a sovereign Palestinian state and a Gaza reconstruction conference.

While the SPD's stance appears supportive of Israel, it remains critical of certain Israeli policies. As Germany's party of the left, they tend to take a more nuanced view compared to the CDU/CSU, who historically have aligned more with Israel's security concerns[2].

  • The SPD's Mitte district association in Berlin, with their motion at the state party conference on May 24, has been gaining attention from the "Berliner Morgenpost" for their stance on the Middle East conflict.
  • The motion expresses concern for the plight of the Palestinian civilian population and the destruction in Gaza, while simultaneously advocating for the Palestinians' right to self-determination and urging the federal government to back a sovereign Palestinian state.
  • Max Landero, deputy district chairman, admitted that the SPD's stance on the Middle East conflict has been lacking clarity and expressed his hope that their balanced position, developed through collaboration with Jewish and Palestinian voices, will be received fairly at the state party conference.
