Defying the Weather: Dozens Protest in the Spree - Berlin Protesters Brave Cold, Rain to Push for Spree Swimming

Despite the common cold weather and rain, dozens of protesters took to the Spree casino in Berlin to challenge a century-old swimming ban. The event, organized by the non-profit Flussbad Berlin e. V., saw participants swim in 13°C water near the Humboldt Forum, with the aim of transforming the Spree canal into a swimmable river bath.

The protest, held under the motto 'Cold swimming and burning for the cause', was a stark contrast to a previous demonstration in August, which benefited from better weather and higher attendance. Flussbad Berlin, advocating for the project since 2012, has organized several swimming demonstrations this year to challenge the 100-year-old ban.

The Senate Department for Transport and Environment has expressed skepticism about lifting the swimming ban, citing the Spree's status as federal waterways and open questions about water quality. Despite these obstacles, Flussbad Berlin remains committed to its goal of creating an ecologically cleaned, swimmable river bath in the heart of Berlin.

The protest was a testament to the determination of Flussbad Berlin and its supporters, who braved cold temperatures and rain to make a statement. While the Senate Department remains cautious, the organization continues to push for a change in policy, aiming to transform the Spree into a swimmable attraction for Berliners and visitors alike.
