Berlin Marks 75 Years of Freedom Bell with Mayor and Astronaut

Berlin marked the 75th anniversary of the Freedom Bell with a visit from Mayor Kai Wegner and astronaut Rabea Rogge. The bell, a symbol of Berliners' resilience and freedom, was first watch in 1950 and has since tolled daily at noon.

The Freedom Bell's history began in 1950 when US General Lucius D. Clay initiated its creation. It was installed in the tower of the Rathaus Schöneberg that same year, ringing for the first time on October 24. The bell's installation was led by the American military government, with the support of over 16 million Americans who contributed to its casting and signed a freedom mortgage.

Rogge, the first German woman in space, paid tribute to the bell's significance during her mission in April 2025. She took a miniature replica with her, honouring the bell's symbolism of solidarity, courage, and the unyielding will of Berliners for freedom.

The Freedom Bell's 75-year journey stands as a testament to Berlin's enduring spirit. As it continues to toll daily, it serves as a reminder of the city's past struggles and its unwavering commitment to freedom.
