Berlin law enforcement reported over 3,000 instances of unauthorized border crossings
In a recent announcement, the Federal Police Directorate Berlin has released statistics regarding unauthorized entries and immediate stops at the German-Polish border for the years 2021, 2023, and 2024.
For the first six months of 2021, the Federal Police registered 3,046 unauthorized entries in Berlin and Brandenburg. However, the number of immediate stops during the same period was higher. In 2021, a total of 2,642 people were stopped immediately at the German-Polish border or in connection with a border crossing.
The statistics for 2023 and 2024 show a significant decrease in unauthorized entries compared to 2021. In 2023, around 5,430 unauthorized entries were recorded, and this number dropped to around 5,670 in 2024. It is important to note that these statistics only cover the regions of Berlin and Brandenburg.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) issued an order to intensify border controls and reject asylum seekers at the border in 2023. This order likely contributed to the decrease in unauthorized entries seen in 2023 and 2024.
The Federal Police has three police inspections at the border with Poland, located in Angermünde, Frankfurt (Oder), and Forst, to help manage these increased controls.
While there is no direct comparison of unauthorized entries at the German-Polish border from 2023 to 2024 relative to the first half of 2022, some contextual insights can be gained from related data. For instance, in 2024, Poland received 5,324 applications for international protection at its border crossing points, which includes the German-Polish border, but does not break down specifically by the German-Polish border.
However, the Polish government's focus on the Polish-Belarusian and Polish-Ukrainian borders, due to geopolitical issues and refugee flows, makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about unauthorized entries at the German-Polish border.
For precise and detailed statistics on unauthorized entries at the German-Polish border, official reports from Germany or Poland's border guard or migration authorities would be required.
