On both sides of the street there are light poles and trees, and in the background there are buildings, an arch, and a tower. The sky is filled with clouds.

Berlin gears up for freezing rain as icy conditions persist across the city

Berlin is bracing for another bout of freezing rain and snow on Thursday, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). The city has already taken steps to tackle icy conditions, with coordinated efforts across all 12 districts and the BSR waste management company.

On January 30, 2026, the Senate Department for Mobility, Traffic, Climate Protection and Environment, led by Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU), organised a city-wide response to icy paths and squares. All districts deployed their street and green space offices, supported by BSR with grit, clearing tools, and extra personnel. Priority was given to essential locations such as supermarkets, clinics, schools, and childcare centres.

The BSR has now shifted its entire workforce to winter maintenance, focusing on roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks. However, its recent direct support to districts for icy areas will be temporarily paused. Despite these efforts, Senator Bonde has reminded property owners that their legal duty to clear snow and ice from pavements remains unchanged.

The city's measures aim to reduce hazards, but individual responsibility for private pathways and entrances stays in place. With another freezing rain event approaching, authorities are urging residents to stay cautious and fulfil their obligations.

The upcoming freezing rain on Thursday will test Berlin's preparations once again. While the city's coordinated response covers public areas, property owners must still clear their own sections. The BSR's full redeployment to winter duties reflects the ongoing challenge posed by the icy conditions.
