In the heart of Berlin, Germany, the Spore Initiative, a gallery founded by German entrepreneur Hans Schoepflin and Mexican-Cuban artist Osvaldo Sanchez, is making waves. The gallery, which opened its doors in April 2023, is currently hosting a group exhibition titled "Landworks, Collective Action and Sound," in collaboration with Dar Jacir, an art space and farming cooperative in the West Bank.

The exhibition, as well as the Spore Initiative's previous work, is a testament to the gallery's dedication to ecosocial justice and using culture as a tool for change. This commitment extends to supporting marginalised communities, with Spore having worked with Haitian, Filipino, and Kurdish minority diaspora groups.

However, the Spore Initiative has faced challenges. In November 2024, a resolution by the German Bundestag made public funding for culture and science projects conditional on adherence to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. This policy, which equates criticism of Israel with antisemitism, has led to a suppression of pro-Palestinian voices in cultural spaces.

Spore, one of the few places in Germany where discussions about Palestine can take place freely, has been labelled "anti-constitutional" by the Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution for its support of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement. Despite this, the Spore Initiative continues to host exhibitions, events, and discussions centred on Palestinian stories and perspectives.

The Spore Initiative's latest project, a two-day symposium on the Palestinian economy, was a platform for panel events around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, named "Zeit Zu Reden" (Time to Talk). This series was started by Ghokassian, a senior figure in German tech, Israeli orchestra conductor Ido Arad, and journalist Kristin Helberg, and was brought to Spore for discussion.

Hans Schoepflin, founder of the Schoepflin Foundation, which provides €12m annually and funds investigative journalism outlet Correctiv and provides grants for local media organizations, provided support for the Spore project despite the foundation never previously funding projects directly related to Israel and Palestine. This support underscores Schoepflin's commitment to free speech and democratic values.

Not reliant on external or state funding, the Spore Initiative is less vulnerable to financial injury, allowing it to maintain its stance in the face of adversity. Alampi, from Spore, states that there are many communities in Berlin who do not feel heard, and the gallery's work is a response to this. The Spore Initiative has also issued a statement supporting Berlin communities who feel silenced or discriminated against.

In a climate where pro-Palestinian voices in cultural spaces are increasingly suppressed, the Spore Initiative stands as a beacon of free expression. By continuing to host exhibitions and discussions centered on Palestinian stories and perspectives, the Spore Initiative is defying the restrictive legislative environment that curtails pro-Palestinian cultural expression, effectively challenging entrenched structural discrimination that has often been overlooked.

  2. Amidst the ongoing debates about freedom of speech and the suppression of pro-Palestinian voices in cultural spaces, the Spore Initiative's stance and continued work in the field of ecosocial justice, arts, and politics have positioned them as a significant player in both the general-news discourse and broader political conversations.
