Cemeteries Remain Closed Due to Ice Hazard - Berlin Closes Over 40 Cemeteries This Weekend Due to Icy Conditions

Over 40 cemeteries across Berlin will remain closed this weekend due to icy weather. The decision affects multiple districts, including Pankow, Mitte, and Neukölln. Authorities have cited safety concerns as the main reason for the temporary shutdowns.

The Evangelical Cemetery Association of Berlin-Mitte manages the sites, which span vast areas. With winter conditions making paths hazardous, maintenance teams have focused only on clearing essential routes. Officials warned that safe access for visitors could not be ensured under current conditions.

No funerals will be disrupted, as none were scheduled for the weekend. The closures apply to cemeteries in districts such as Tiergarten, Wedding, Friedrichshain, and Kreuzberg. Authorities have confirmed that all affected sites are expected to reopen by Monday.

The weekend shutdown aims to prevent accidents on slippery ground. Visitors will need to wait until Monday to access the cemeteries again. The association has stressed that the measure is purely precautionary.
