Frost and old bridges cause roadworks on motorways - Berlin, Brandenburg, and Pomerania face years of roadworks chaos in 2026
Major roadworks will disrupt traffic across Berlin, Brandenburg, and Pomerania in 2026. Autobahn GmbH is increasing its investment to €320 million, up from €240 million the previous year. The projects include bridge repairs, temporary structures, and long-term construction sites that will affect key routes for years to come.
In Pomerania, five bridge projects are scheduled for 2026. The most notable is a €7 million temporary bridge over the Störwasserstraße on the A14 near Plate, set to begin in September. Meanwhile, the A19 between Röbel and the Brandenburg border toward Rostock faces likely speed restrictions due to winter damage.
Berlin's infrastructure challenges continue, particularly with its ageing bridges. Many date back to 1870 and are protected as historical landmarks, such as the Oberbaumbrücke—a Neogothic structure from 1894–1896 with towers inspired by medieval fortifications. These protections prevent demolition, forcing planners to balance preservation with repairs. The A115 Spanische Allee site remains a major disruption, now delayed until at least the end of 2027.
Brandenburg's largest project is the replacement of the Mülenfließ Bridge near Rüdersdorf. The 742-metre structure will cost €221.6 million and take nearly four years, running from October 2026 to June 2030. Funding is split across the three states: Pomerania receives €76 million, Brandenburg €181 million, and Berlin €63 million.
The 2026 roadworks will bring long-term changes to key transport routes. Temporary bridges, heritage protections, and multi-year projects will shape traffic patterns for years. Drivers in the region should expect ongoing delays and detours as work progresses.
