Saluting the Pioneer: Magnus Hirschfeld and Berlin's Tribute

Berlin honors sex researcher Hirschfeld's legacy - Berlin bears resemblance to sexologist Hirschfeld's era, echoing the progressive sexual understanding and acceptance associated with Hirschfeld's influence.

Steven's Bust Stop on Tiergarten's avenue is temporarily transforming into a poignant tribute for the sexual scientist, Magnus Hirschfeld, who crusaded for the queer rights community. This transformation is in line with the city-wide Magnus Hirschfeld Day announcement from Berlin's Social Affairs, Equality, Integration, and Diversity Administration.

Hirschfeld, a trailblazer in the LGBTQ+ struggle, established the groundbreaking Scientific-Humanitarian Committee in 1897, which challenged the criminalization of homosexuality and strove for public acceptance. Later, he spearheaded the Institute for Sexual Research, a bastion for sexology research, which was eventually closed by the Nazi regime in 1933.

The infamous Nazis, captivated by bigotry, not only shattered Hirschfeld's sanctuary but also forced him into exile. Despite his persecution, Hirschfeld, being a proud homosexual, bravely persevered until his demise on May 14, 1935, in the quaint city of Nice, France.

This temporary bus stop tribute aims to commemorate Hirschfeld’s achievements and his resilient comrades. On the auspicious day itself, there will unveil a new queer historical city map dubbed "Magnus Hirschfeld - Stars of his Queer Berlin" and an audio walk dedicated to the unsung hero. Berlin's French Embassy has planned a celebratory event with the title "Magnus Hirschfeld - Stars of his Queer Berlin" on theday.
