Triumph in the Grosser Preis von Berlin

In a thrilling race at the Hoppegarten racecourse, English apprentice jockey Billy Loughnane clinched his first Group 1 victory aboard the seven-year-old world star, Rebels Romance, in the 135th Grosser Preis von Berlin on August 10, 2025[2][3].

A Win for the British Contingent

Trained by Charlie Appleby at Godolphin's base in Moulton Paddocks, Newmarket, England, Rebels Romance demonstrated its versatility by crossing the finish line three-quarters of a length ahead of the French contender Junko[1]. The victory was a significant achievement for Loughnane, who is associated with Appleby and the Godolphin stable[2].

Riding for Glory

Loughnane, who has ridden eight winners from 12 rides for Appleby this season[2], expressed his joy after the win, stating, "I'm absolutely thrilled. What a moment to win my first Group 1 race here in front of this crowd."[2]

Future Races Await

Rebels Romance, owned by Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai, is expected to compete in upcoming races, with the Canadian International at Woodbine and the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar mentioned as potential targets by Appleby[2]. The horse has been made the 5-1 joint second favourite for a third Breeders' Cup victory[2].

Other Races and Winners

Meanwhile, the Arquana Stutenpreis, another breeding race, was won by Koffi Kick, with Thore Hammer-Hansen in the saddle[4]. The Steher-Preis was won by Waldadler, ridden by Hammer-Hansen, who is from Denmark[6]. The Hoppegartener Fliegerpreis, another breeding race, was won by the nine-year-old Zerostress under Michael Cadeddu[5].

International Participation

The races at Hoppegarten saw the participation of horses from France, England, Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic[7]. The Hoppegartener Fliegerpreis was worth 40,000 euros, while the Steher-Preis was worth 30,000 euros, and the Grosser Preis von Berlin was a Group 1 race worth 155,000 euros over 2,400 meters[8]. The race was attended by 11,900 spectators[9].
