Police warns against ice skating on Brandenburg's frozen lakes - Berlin and Brandenburg freeze under dangerous ice and sub-zero temperatures
Freezing temperatures have gripped Berlin and Brandenburg, with forecasts predicting icy and snowy conditions throughout Tuesday. Authorities have issued warnings as sub-zero weather raises concerns over frozen lakes, rivers, and canals—many of which remain dangerously unstable despite appearances.
Temperatures on Tuesday will hover between -3°C and -1°C, dropping as low as -9°C overnight. The cold snap has led to widespread ice formation, but police stress that frozen surfaces may still be unsafe. Factors like water flow, wastewater, underwater currents, and shifting winds can weaken ice in unexpected areas.
The risks are particularly high in the West Polizeidirektion and Dahme-Spreewald districts, where water police have already dealt with difficult ice rescues. Residents are urged to avoid skating on natural bodies of water entirely. Instead, officials recommend using maintained artificial rinks or shallow, flooded meadows, which are monitored for safety. Parents are also advised to teach children about the dangers of stepping onto frozen lakes or rivers. Skating alone or after dark is strongly discouraged, as accidents in remote areas can delay emergency response. The cold spell will continue into Wednesday, with a mix of sun and clouds but persistent slippery conditions. Highs will reach only 0°C at best, keeping roads and pavements hazardous.
The prolonged freeze has created tempting but treacherous ice across Brandenburg. With temperatures staying well below zero, police and rescue teams remain on high alert. Residents must stay cautious, stick to designated skating areas, and avoid untested frozen surfaces to prevent accidents.
