Alba Berlin has announced the termination of head coach Israel González, who has been with the club for nearly four years. Pedro Calles, a seasoned Bundesliga basketball coach, steps up to replace him, as per club announcements.
Sports director Himar Ojeda contemplated, "Making this decision wasn't easy for us. The lack of sporting advancements forced us to accept that we can't fully exploit our potential within this setup, necessitating fresh impetus."
A Struggling Season for Alba Berlin
González had a successful stint as a coach since joining Alba in 2017 as an assistant under Aíto Garcia Reneses. However, he could not reclaim any titles following the 2021/22 season when he took over from Reneses. This season, Alba is placed a disappointing 12th in the Bundesliga, battling for a spot in the playoffs. In the EuroLeague, the team has managed a mere four wins out of 28 games.
Pedro Calles, an accomplished BBL coach, has taken over with considerable experience working in Germany since 2012. He has meticulously moved through prominent teams like Artland Dragons, Rasta Vechta (2012), Hamburg Towers (2020), and most recently Oldenburg (2022). Calles parted ways with the EWE Baskets in November but re-joined Alba in January and signed a contract running until 2027.
Ojeda commented, "With Pedro Calles, we have a proven expert who has effectively integrated himself with our team. We must now all collaborate to make the most of the remaining games and aim for the highest possible ranking by the end of the BBL regular season."
