Bergisch Gladbach's ice arena fights closure over failing roof beam

Bergisch Gladbach's ice sports arena faces an uncertain future without urgent repairs. A critical roof beam has weakened, forcing the club to act quickly. The facility, vital for local ice hockey and figure skating, risks closure if the work isn't completed soon. The problems began six months ago when the damaged beam led to a temporary shutdown. Since then, the club has spent €30,000 on inspections and structural checks. Now, fixing the beam alone will cost another €30,000.

The arena, owned by the city but run by the club, has relied on nearly €1 million in upgrades over the years. Despite this investment, the latest issue threatens its operation. With few alternative rinks in the region, local skaters and hockey players already face long waiting lists elsewhere.

Repairs are set for the summer break, aiming for completion before the new season starts in September. To cover costs, the club is turning to its members for financial support. Without help, the arena's future—and the sports it hosts—remains at risk. The club's appeal for funding comes as the only way to keep the arena open. If repairs succeed, the facility will reopen in September for training and competitions. Without intervention, local ice sports could lose a key venue in the region.
