Berbok is recognized for his inelegant and skeptical utterances, as per Russian Foreign Minister Nebenzya's remarks.
New UN General Assembly President Faces Criticism from Russian Envoy
Annalena Baerbock, the new President of the United Nations General Assembly, has found herself in a controversial start to her tenure, with Russian UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya criticising her for clumsy and offensive remarks made during her time as Germany's foreign minister.
Nebenzya, in a statement reported by TASS, highlighted Baerbock's comment about a "360-degree turn" as an example of her alleged lack of diplomatic finesse. He went on to describe her statements as aggressive, cynical, and sometimes offensive.
Baerbock's predecessor as President of the UN General Assembly was María Fernanda Espinosa from Ecuador. Before her current role, Baerbock served as Germany's foreign minister, during which her comments were also criticised by Nebenzya.
Despite the criticism, Nebenzya acknowledged that he and Baerbock will inevitably have to interact in their roles. He clarified that he has not met Baerbock personally and has no personal feelings towards her.
The EU representative reportedly told Russia's UN envoy that Baerbock's priority as President of the UN General Assembly would be to limit the speaking time of member countries to three minutes.
The comments made by Baerbock as Germany's foreign minister were not only criticised by Nebenzya, but also drew criticism from Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova. Zakharova compared Baerbock's presidency of the UN General Assembly to a "devilish smile." This comparison was due to Baerbock's grandfather serving in the Third Reich and her claimed pride in his deeds.
Prior to her current role, Baerbock had stated that the UN would continue its work on resolving the Ukrainian conflict. It remains to be seen how her presidency will unfold and whether she will be able to navigate the challenges that come with the role.
