Bensberg's ice rink has been temporarily shut down for school and club sports activities.
The Bensberg Ice Sports Hall, a popular venue for school and club sports, has been closed indefinitely due to safety concerns regarding its ceiling structure. The closure was announced on Tuesday following the revocation of its use by the lower building authority.
Last year, structural defects were identified in the supporting structure of the hall, prompting the city administration to mandate either repairs or a report confirming the structural integrity of the wooden ceiling to continue sports activities. A one-time exception permit was granted, allowing sports to continue under the supervision of a structural engineer. However, the required repairs have not been completed, and no certificate of approval from a state-recognized structural engineer has been received.
The Eissportverein (ice sports club) responsible for the maintenance of the Bensberg Ice Sports Hall has not yet carried out the renovation of the ceiling structure, which was originally scheduled for completion by summer 2026. This delay has led to the hall's closure as of September 2025.
The city administration did not renew the exception permit this year, as the defects in the supporting structure have not been eliminated. The city is currently in dialogue with the association to find a solution for the continued operation of the Bensberg Ice Sports Hall.
The closure of the Bensberg Ice Sports Hall has left a gap in the local sports scene, and efforts are being made to find a solution as soon as possible. Until then, school and club sports will have to find alternative venues for their activities. The safety of the participants is the top priority, and safe operation in the Bensberg Ice Sports Hall can no longer be guaranteed.
