Bengals Back Jake Browning Despite Mixed Start as QB1
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning has had a mixed start to his tenure as the team's starter, following Joe Burrow's injury. In two games, Browning has thrown for 13 points, but his performances have been inconsistent.
In his debut, Browning led the Bengals to a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions. However, his second start against the Minnesota Vikings resulted in a loss, with Browning throwing for 140 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
Coach Zac Taylor has publicly endorsed Browning, stating, 'I have confidence in Jake's ability to win crazy games for us.' Taylor's support comes despite Browning's recent performances, including a 28-3 loss to the Denver Broncos where he passed for only 125 yards.
Offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher believes the team needs to provide more support to Browning to help him improve. Browning's overall statistics since replacing Burrow show 506 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions in 84 attempts. Browning's previous experience filling in for Burrow in 2023 saw him complete 70.4% of his passes with 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions over seven games.
Despite Browning's mixed performances, the Bengals are backing their quarterback. With Brett Rypien now serving as the backup, the team will continue to support Browning as he looks to build on his 13 points in two games and improve his overall performance.
