Benfica's presidential bid is taken up by Luis Filipe Vieira in the upcoming elections.

In a recent interview with TVI/CNN, Luís Filipe Vieira, a former president of Benfica, announced his intention to run for the presidency once again in the upcoming elections scheduled for October 25th. Vieira's decision comes amidst a competitive race involving six candidates, including the current president, Rui Costa.

Vieira, who won 22 titles during his tenure at Benfica, expressed his dream of celebrating a pentacampeonato at the club. However, he criticized the current spending on the latest investments in the football team during the current summer market, suggesting a need for financial prudence.

The former president also accused Pedro Proença, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, of introducing fear and controlling refereeing, as well as being responsible for historical clubs being on the brink of bankruptcy. Vieira announced attacks on some employees of Benfica, including Proença.

Vieira left Benfica following his detention in the context of operation Cartão Vermelho. Since then, Rui Costa, who was vice-president, assumed the position of maximum leader. Rui Costa has not spoken to Luís Filipe Vieira since he was elected as the current president.

In the interview, Vieira also guaranteed that he would lead the television rights if he returns to Benfica. He has concerns about the future of Benfica and believes it may face serious problems.

Vieira's presidential campaign platform for Benfica in 2025 has not been detailed explicitly. However, his recent comments on the start of the 2025-2026 Primeira Liga season suggest a focus on regaining competitive balance and reinforcing Benfica’s standing in the league.

The election is expected to be a contest between experienced former Benfica leaders and other candidates. If more details become available, such as interviews or official campaign releases, those would be necessary to outline Vieira’s specific priorities and proposals for Benfica’s future.
