Benalmádena's Dazzling Chinese New Year Celebration Unites Cultures in 2023

Benalmadena continues its internationalism, where diverse communities make the town one of the most colourful and culturally diverse on the Costa del Sol.

On Sunday, February 22, the town hosted a massive celebration of Chinese New Year, drawing the Chinese community from across the Malaga region. Organised by the Asociación de Chinos Unidos de la Península Ibérica in collaboration with the Benalmadena Town Hall, the event featured a lively parade starting at 11.30am from Plaza Adolfo Suárez and winding to Plaza de la Mezquita. Attendees enjoyed cultural workshops, spellbinding dance performances, traditional Chinese cuisine, and prize draws until 3pm. The colourful procession provoked widespread interest and excitement, turning the streets into a festive display of Asian heritage.

Mayor Juan Antonio Lara, joined by Councillor for Foreign Residents Presi Aguilera and other local government officials, actively participated, celebrating the gathering as a powerful symbol of coexistence and mutual respect between cultures. The multitudinous turnout was a demonstration of the deep-rooted presence and importance of the Chinese community in the region.

Benalmadena boasts one of the most diverse populations on the Costa del Sol, with residents from over 140 nationalities living in harmony. The international fabric, strengthened by significant British, Moroccan, Italian, and other expat groups, has transformed the town into a cosmopolitan focal point. The Chinese community, in particular, plays a key role, contributing to local commerce, tourism initiatives (including iconic Chinese junk boat tours in the marina), and cultural exchange. Efforts like free Chinese language classes offered by the town hall further strengthen these ties, promoting integration and understanding.

Such events and the broader multicultural environment not only celebrate diversity but also drive economic and social vitality. They show Benalmadena as the model of intercultural success on the Costa del Sol that it is, where shared traditions build bridges and improve quality of life for all.
