Benalmádena's Avenida del Sol reopens after major water infrastructure upgrades

Avenida del Sol in Benalmádena has fully reopened after months of major infrastructure work. The completion of the so-called 'water motorway' project marks the end of frequent water cuts that once disrupted daily life. Residents and visitors alike have welcomed the return of smooth traffic flow along this key route. Before the upgrades, Benalmádena struggled with severe water shortages, especially during summer. Between 2018 and 2022, households faced restrictions of up to 40% due to ageing pipes and heavy reliance on tankers. Neighbouring cities like Marbella and Estepona had already benefited from regional pipeline improvements, leaving Benalmádena at a disadvantage.

The newly completed project modernised the water supply network, eliminating the need for drastic usage limits. The entire stretch of Avenida del Sol, from Flatotel to the Sunset Beach roundabout, is now open to traffic. This comes just in time for Holy Week processions, making popular spots more accessible for visitors.

However, strong winds on Sunday, March 29, caused several newly replanted palm trees to topple. Local teams quickly secured the area and checked for further risks. Police have also reminded drivers to stay alert, particularly during peak traffic periods.

The project is part of a wider push to upgrade utilities across Benalmádena. Officials say the improvements will support the town's growing needs and reduce future disruptions. The reopening of Avenida del Sol brings relief to residents who endured years of water shortages and traffic delays. With the infrastructure now in place, the town expects smoother daily operations and better access for tourists. Authorities continue to monitor the area to ensure safety and stability.
