Beloved figure Keyboard Bob passes away in Deep Ellum
Remembering Keyboard Bob: A Beloved Icon of Deep Ellum
Bob Crawford, fondly known as "Keyboard Bob," was a cherished figure in the Deep Ellum community and surrounding East Dallas neighborhoods. His passing at the age of 73 on Sunday morning has left a void in the heart of the community.
Known for carrying his electronic keyboard around, Bob was a regular sight in the area, often joining live shows at bars and clubs, telling jokes, asking for rides, and warmly interacting with locals. His personality and presence made him a daily fixture and beloved mascot of Deep Ellum, symbolizing the neighborhood’s bohemian and musical spirit.
Bob was more than just a street performer. He was a genuine character with a "heart of gold," often telling people, “If nobody's told you I love you today, I do.” Despite a complicated and difficult past—including betrayal, abandonment, and abuse—he embraced his role as a community figure and wanted people to understand him and his story.
The indie documentary about Crawford, titled His Name Is Bob (2010), marked a turning point in his life. Directed by Lisa Johnson Mitchell, the film explored his life and complex history. It won multiple awards, including a Platinum Remi Award at WorldFest for Best Short Documentary, and is available to watch on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
After the release of the documentary, Crawford's acceptance in the community grew. The Deep Ellum and East Dallas communities supported him throughout his life, including raising money for his medical costs when he was hospitalized in 2017. He remained a cherished element of the neighborhood’s culture and nightlife, remembered for his charm, generosity, and unforgettable performances.
Arts Access, an arts journalism collaboration powered by The Dallas Morning News and KERA, supported Bob's story, providing a platform for his voice to be heard. The News and KERA retained full editorial control of Arts Access' journalism.
In a Facebook post, Lisa Johnson Mitchell announced Crawford's death, expressing her sadness and gratitude for the impact he had on so many lives. A celebration of life in Crawford's honor will be held soon.
A Reddit thread mourns Keyboard Bob as a "true Dallas legend," a "Dallas icon," and "an institution." East Dallas has lost a special person and a part of its soul with his passing.
