Beloved figure in the film industry, Robert Redford, an Oscar-winning actor, director, and activist, has tragically passed away at the age of 89.
Robert Redford, Iconic Actor and Film Pioneer, Passes Away at 89
Robert Redford, the acclaimed actor and director known for his groundbreaking roles in films like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "All the President's Men," has passed away at the age of 89. The cause of his death was not disclosed.
Redford, who died at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, made his breakthrough alongside Paul Newman as the affable outlaw in the hippy Western "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" in 1969. The chemistry between the two actors was palpable, but despite their long personal friendship, Redford was never to team up again with Newman, who died in 2008.
Throughout his illustrious career, Redford portrayed a wide range of characters, from the romantic lead in "Out of Africa" to the alcoholic ex-rodeo champ in "The Electric Horseman" and the middle-aged millionaire who offers to buy sex in "Indecent Proposal." However, Redford never won the best actor Oscar. His first outing as a director - the 1980 family drama "Ordinary People" - won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.
In addition to his acting and directing prowess, Redford was also a pioneer in the world of independent filmmaking. He founded the Sundance Institute and Festival in the late 1970s to support independent filmmakers and promote independent films. The Sundance Festival has since become one of the most influential independent film showcases in the world.
Redford was intensely private and bought land in remote Utah for his family retreat. Yet, he never showed an interest in entering politics, although he often espoused a liberal viewpoint. In a 2017 interview, during the presidency of Donald Trump, he suggested that Trump should "quit for our benefit."
Redford was married for more than 25 years to his first wife before their divorce in 1985. In 2009, he married Sibylle Szaggars. He remained active in his career until his death, with his last film "The Old Man & the Gun" released in 2018.
Redford's legacy extends beyond the film industry. He quietly championed environmental causes such as the Natural Resources Defense Council and the National Wildlife Federation. In 2001, he was awarded an honorary, or lifetime achievement, Oscar.
Redford's contributions to the film industry, environmental causes, and independent filmmaking will be remembered for years to come. His passing marks the end of an era for Hollywood, and his spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched and the films he left behind.
