Jorge Costa: A Football Legend and Manager Extraordinaire
Jorge Costa, affectionately known as "The Tank" and "Bicho," left an indelible mark on the world of football through his remarkable career as a player and manager.
As a formidable central defender, Costa spent the majority of his 15-year career at FC Porto, where he played 383 games and scored 25 goals. His tenure with Porto was marked by numerous triumphs, including captaining the team to the 2004 UEFA Champions League title under Jose Mourinho. Costa's leadership was instrumental in Porto's victory, making him a key figure in one of the club's most historic moments.
Costa's achievements with Porto extend beyond the Champions League. He was part of a squad that amassed a total of 24 major titles, including eight Primeira Liga championships, the UEFA Cup in 2003, the Intercontinental Cup, five Taça de Portugal trophies, and eight Portuguese Super Cups.
Internationally, Costa earned 50 caps for Portugal, participating in one FIFA World Cup (2002) and one UEFA European Championship (Euro 2000). Early in his career, he was part of the Portugal Under-20 squad that won the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship, where he scored in the penalty shootout during the final.
After retiring from playing in 2006, Costa transitioned to football management and coaching. His managerial career spanned several countries, including Romania, Cyprus, France, India, Tunisia, and Gabon. Clubs he managed include CFR Cluj (Romania), AEL Limassol and Anorthosis (Cyprus), Tours FC (France), and CS Sfaxien (Tunisia). He also served as the manager of the Gabon national team. At the time of his death in August 2025, he was working as the Director of Football at FC Porto.
Costa's leadership and success made a lasting global impact, especially in Portuguese football and in Porto’s international reputation during the early 2000s. He is widely remembered for his defensive prowess, captaincy in historic Porto triumphs, and his contributions to football both on and off the pitch by nurturing talent and managing teams internationally.
