Celebrating Lennart Meri's Legacy

On March 29, it's not just my best friend's birthday, but it would've been the 95th birthday of the legendary Estonian statesman, Lennart Meri. He's a man we all truly respected, one of the founding fathers of Estonia's post-occupation success story.

I've always told my friends that Meri's birthday is his birthday, as his impact on our lives far outweighs that of many other politicians. Honest, principled, and influential, Meri was a true mensch.

Back in 1996, I sent a congratulatory email to the re-elected president Meri, thinking he'd never see it. To my surprise, I received a personal reply from [email protected]. He took time out of his busy schedule to respond to a young fan he didn't know - a gesture that shows the kind of man Meri was.

Meri was popular among both left and right-leaning people, even when he served as foreign minister under the centre-left Centre Party and was later favored by the centre-right Pro Patria Alliance. He wasn't bound by party lines because he didn't belong to one - he was a traveller, writer, and filmmaker at heart.

Meri attended University of Tartu during the Soviet occupation and earned a degree in history, but the Soviet politics prevented him from working as a historian. Instead, he turned to arts to make a living. In 1958, he published his first book, "Tracing Cobras and Karakurts," a travel book about his trip to Central Asia. But he's best known for "Silver White," a masterful disquisition about the past of Estonians.

After the Iron Curtain fell, Meri was invited to rebuild Estonia's foreign service as foreign minister. Together with his bright, patriotic team, he transformed the ministry into a model of efficiency and effectiveness. Even today, the foreign service still strongly reflects Meri's principles and his mission-driven work culture.

Let's celebrate Lennart Meri's legacy - a man who transcended the typical politician role, rebuilt Estonia's foreign service, and strengthened the country's ties with the West. Meri was a giant among politicians, and his impact continues to shape Estonia's identity and foreign policy.
