Beloved 14-year-old rescue dog killed in violent park attack by loose dog
A 14-year-old rescue dog named Petey was killed in a violent attack at Campbell Park in Woodland on March 14. The incident involved a large, loose dog and has sparked calls for stricter penalties against irresponsible pet owners. This marks the second time in a month that a small dog has been fatally attacked by a larger one in the area.
The attack occurred while Petey, owned by Tom Bowler, was in the park. The larger dog mauled Petey for roughly two minutes, inflicting severe injuries to his neck and torso. Despite being rushed to a vet, Petey later died from his wounds.
Yolo County's District Attorney's Office and Animal Control are now investigating the owner of the large dog. Potential criminal charges may follow, though the dog itself remains with its owner for now. Authorities have also reminded the public about local leash laws in the wake of the incident. Bowler is pushing for tougher consequences for owners whose dogs harm other animals. His campaign comes after another similar attack in the same area just weeks earlier.
The case remains under review by Yolo County officials. If charges are filed, they could set a precedent for how future dog attacks are handled in the region. For now, the community awaits further updates on the investigation and any potential legal action.
