Bringing Back the Nuclear Fuel: Belgium Reconsiders Nuclear Phase-out

Belgium Phases Out Nuclear Energy Production

In a surprising turn of events, the Belgian parliament has voted in favor of reviving its nuclear power program, reversing the decision made 20 years ago to phase out nuclear energy by 2035. With a stark contrast, 120 MPs voted for extending the lifespan of existing reactors, while a meager 8 voted against, with 31 abstentions.

This shift in policy comes under the leadership of Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who is steering the country towards constructing new nuclear reactors alongside extending the lifespans of existing ones. Currently, Belgium operates two nuclear power plants with seven reactors, yet three have been decommissioned.

The nuclear phase-out had been legally established in 2003. Initially, the remaining reactors were scheduled to be shut down by 2025, but the debate surrounding energy security and the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led the government to postpone the phase-out by ten years, with only two reactors to remain in operation until 2035.

The new community policy includes a reconsideration of the employment and vocational training policies in response to the revival of Belgium's nuclear power program, as environmental-science and politics play significant roles in the general-news surrounding this decision made by Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The scientific aspects involved in extending the lifespans of existing nuclear reactors and constructing new ones are crucial elements in the broader context of the country's energy security.
