Belarus Tightens Pedestrian Penalties, Simplifies Vehicle Registration

New regulations aim to streamline vehicle registration and pedestrian safety in Belarus. Pedestrians face stricter penalties for traffic violations, while car owners enjoy simplified procedures for certain car registrations.

In a bid to enhance safety, authorities have warned that pedestrians caught drunk and violating traffic rules will face administrative responsibility, especially for first-time offenses. Previously, insufficient warnings were given.

For car registrations, several changes have been implemented. New cars bought from a salon in 2024 or 2025 no longer require a GAI inspection. Similarly, updating passport information unrelated to car modifications also exempts owners from this inspection. However, a full package of documents is still mandatory for registration or deregistration.

In cases of lost or stolen passports, receiving a duplicate does not necessitate a GAI inspection. Likewise, registration after lease payment or deregistration after a serious accident, if the car is not restored, also bypasses this requirement. The responsibility for driving without a license will be differentiated based on the reason for not having one.

These changes aim to simplify car registration processes and enhance pedestrian safety. Pedestrians should expect stricter penalties for traffic violations, while car owners can enjoy simplified procedures for certain registrations and deregistrations.
