Belarus issues orange alert as freezing winds and sleet hit this weekend

An orange-level weather alert has been issued for November 18 as Belarus braces for harsh winter conditions. Forecasters warn of gusty winds, near-freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and sleet over the weekend. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for sudden cold and reduced visibility.

Meteorologist Dmitry Ryabov predicts fog at night and in the mornings, cutting visibility to as little as 500 metres. Hard frosts between -2°C and -7°C are expected overnight on both Saturday and Sunday. Daytime temperatures will also remain below freezing.

Belarus’s Interior Ministry has advised drivers to avoid using personal vehicles due to the severe weather. The State Traffic Inspectorate has recommended a cautious driving style, warning against sudden manoeuvres. Those who haven’t switched to winter tyres are particularly urged to stay off the roads.

Pedestrians have been told to take extra care when crossing streets and to stay predictable for drivers. Residents are also reminded to dig out warm hats, scarves, and winter boots as the cold snap sets in.

The weather alert remains in place for November 18, with freezing temperatures and poor visibility expected to persist. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to follow safety recommendations as conditions worsen over the weekend.
