Belarus braces for sudden Arctic freeze after record March warmth
A sharp drop in temperatures is heading for Belarus as a Scandinavian cyclone stalls over the region. The sudden shift will bring near-freezing conditions, snow, and sleet by early April. Forecasters warn of a dramatic change from recent mild weather.
Belarus has enjoyed unusually warm conditions in late March. But by the end of the month, temperatures will plunge by 12–15°C (22–27°F) in just one night. The cold snap follows the arrival of a deep 'vortex' of Arctic air spreading across Eastern Europe.
A stalled cyclone from Scandinavia will dominate the weather pattern. The worst effects are expected on the night of April 1–2, with temperatures hovering between -1 and +3°C (30 to 37°F). Precipitation will fall as snow and sleet, marking a return of winter-like conditions. This abrupt shift mirrors a broader trend in Belarus over the past decade. Winters have become increasingly unpredictable, swinging between mild spells and sudden frosts. While blocking highs over Scandinavia have caused similar cold outbreaks in Europe before, the current pattern in 2025–2026 aligns with this growing variability.
The cyclone will bring freezing temperatures, snow, and sleet to Belarus within days. Residents should prepare for a rapid transition from mild to harsh conditions. The event underscores the region's recent pattern of extreme weather swings.
