Behind-the-Scenes Unraveling: Daniel Orlandi Explores the Intricate Design Procedures of the Memorable 'Borderlands' Attire

In an exclusive interview, costume designer Daniel Orlandi shared insights into the creative process behind the vibrant and eclectic costume designs for the film adaptation of Borderlands. The interview, conducted by Spencer Williams, delves into the innovative approach taken to design unique yet practical costumes for characters like Mad Moxxi, Lilith, Tiny Tina, and Dr. Tannis.

Williams expressed his excitement for the project, recalling memories of playing Borderlands as a child. Orlandi, who has worked on diverse projects prior to this one, spoke about what drew him to the film, citing its unique and wild nature as a major appeal.

Preparation and research for the project mainly involved watching players from YouTube to understand the different worlds, characters, and the game's excitement surrounding weapons. Collaborating with director Eli Roth was a fresh experience for both, with the shared goal of blending inspiration from the game with the actors' unique interpretations of their roles.

Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett, wore a costume designed to be comfortable for stunts, jumps, and filming during the pandemic. The initial fitting was done over a web camera, with inputs from the producers, Lionsgate, and the game developers on board with the look after the first fitting.

Tiny Tina's costume, played by Ariana Greenblatt, was designed to be zany and wild, with a focus on proportions to allow her to run and walk comfortably. The raincoat-like design revealed her bombs when opened, a detail inspired by Greenblatt's energy and enthusiasm during the fitting process.

The team collaborated closely with other departments like hair, makeup, production design, and props to bring Pandora's colorful yet run-down landscape to life. The final character discussed was Dr. Tannis, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, whose costume underwent several designs and offered Curtis an opportunity to contribute her ideas.

Orlandi concluded the interview by emphasizing the importance of making actors feel immersed in their characters. He spoke about the joy of giving actors small details, like a hidden band for Curtis, that enhance their performances.

Borderlands is now playing in theaters.

Costume design for movies-and-tv, such as the eclectic designs in Borderlands, requires extensive preparation and research, as seen in Daniel Orlandi's work for the film adaptation. The costume design process involved watching players on YouTube, collaborating with director Eli Roth, and incorporating unique interpretations of characters from the actors themselves.

In the movie, notable characters like Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett, and Tiny Tina, portrayed by Ariana Greenblatt, were fashioned with practical yet expressive costumes, designed to accommodate stunts and traditional movie-making dynamics, while maintaining the game's original eccentricity.
