Beginning of the Lunar Ice Period
In the vibrant music scene of Berlin, renowned German trombonist Conny Bauer is making waves with his latest album, "13 Kuukautta". Collaborating with guitarist Kalle Kalima, the duo is set to release the album under TYXart records and the JAZZart series on September 3.
Born in 1943, Bauer is a respected figure in the jazz world, particularly known for his experimental and free jazz contributions. His musical background centres on trombone performance, often within the context of improvisational and avant-garde genres.
The album, featuring 13 tracks named after Finnish months, is a testament to the duo's innovative approach to music. The tracks are largely cautious yet distinctive, showcasing the artists' unique blend of jazz, improvisation, and a touch of rock.
"Tammikkuu", the first track, begins solemnly and becomes intricate, with the trombone's melody turning into a staccato bass at the third minute. This transition mirrors the dynamic nature of the album, which seamlessly moves from the lyrical interlude of "Helmikuu" to the brighter tracks "Maaliskuu" and "Huhtikuu".
One of the standout tracks is "Ice Moon" or "Jääkuu", a solo performance by Bauer that exemplifies his dialogues with the audience and the space. The wind blows through "Marraskuu", one of the tracks representing summer and autumn as atmospheric changes, while "Toukokuu" features a bristly, coarse sound from Kalima's guitar.
The release concert for "13 Kuukautta" will take place on September 3, 8 PM, at Alter Schwede, located at Sweden Street 11A. Fans of Bauer and Kalima's music can expect an exciting evening of live performance, as the duo showcases their latest work.
Throughout his career, Bauer has been an active participant in Berlin's contemporary music scene, frequently performing in various ensembles with musicians on trombone, piano, bass, and drums. His discovery of sound art and post-punk in the 1980s has only added to his versatility as a musician.
Kalle Kalima, who emerged since the late 1990s with music that falls between jazz and rock, avoids egotism, making for a harmonious collaboration with Bauer. The album "13 Kuukautta" is a testament to their shared vision and innovative spirit.
Many of Bauer's performances can be heard on records and CDs, making his music accessible to a wide audience. With the release of "13 Kuukautta", fans can look forward to another addition to his discography, showcasing his unique style and innovative approach to music.
