Beechwood Tigers Set Sights on 19th State Title in 2024

The Beechwood Tigers, fresh off their 18th state championship win in 2020, are gearing up for another strong campaign in the upcoming 2024 season. Despite losing several key players due to graduation, the team is determined to maintain their dominance in Kentucky Class 2A football.

Coach Jay Volker, who led the team to their fourth state championship in the past five years during his first season with the program, is now entering his third year at Beechwood. With a 26-3 record in two seasons at Beechwood and a 29-19 record overall, Volker is confident in the team's potential.

The Tigers' 2024 schedule is well-rounded, featuring both rivalries and several state-ranked opponents. Highlights include games against Newport Central Catholic, Dixie Heights, Simon Kenton, Covington Catholic, and regional matchups with Owen County, Walton-Verona, St. Henry, Gallatin County, Bracken County, and Campbell County.

The Tigers will be without their starting quarterback, leading rusher, two top receivers, and two leading tacklers, but standout players such as junior Tyler Fryman and Nathan Pabst are expected to step up. Fryman, a versatile player at receiver and defensive back, has also attracted attention from coaches at Louisville, Notre Dame, Toledo, and Miami of Ohio. Meanwhile, Pabst, a two-way starter, scored a total of 12 touchdowns last season.

The offensive line will be rebuilt around senior tackle Carson Eshelman and senior guard Austin Stephenson. A new addition to the team is junior Emmett Queen, a transfer from Covington Catholic, who will be stepping into a starting role at quarterback.

The Tigers are returning 4 starters on offense and 5 on defense, which bodes well for their offensive firepower and defensive strength. Fryman is considered a strong candidate for all-state honours in the upcoming season.

As the Tigers prepare for the 2024 season, they are in Class 2A, District 5 alongside Bracken County, Gallatin County, Owen County, St. Henry, and Walton-Verona. The team's enthusiasm and preparation are high, aiming to replicate the success of the previous season’s championship team.

With a solid schedule, determined returning leadership, and a strong mix of returning players and new talents, the Beechwood Tigers are poised for a strong campaign in the 2024 season.
