The Beckhams Can't Seem to Catch a Break—After Clashing with Their Eldest Son, Brooklyn, They Now Face a Feud with Neighbors
Beckhams' Cotswolds estate expansion sparks neighbour backlash over new driveway
At the heart of the dispute? Seventy-nine trees. David and Victoria Beckham are planning further renovations to their estate in the Cotswolds—a region famed for its pastoral tranquility and picturesque landscapes—but the changes have reportedly sparked outrage among locals, according to The Mirror.
More Trees for More Privacy
In an application submitted to local authorities, the Beckhams propose planting a large number of trees along the boundaries of their property—79 in total, including copper beeches, sessile oaks, and winter lindens. The plans also feature wildflower meadows to give the estate a more natural appearance. The motivation? The new greenery is intended to enhance privacy and security by shielding the property from prying eyes.
Additionally, the couple has requested permission to convert a farm track into a private driveway, with The Mirror reporting that the desire for greater seclusion is the primary reason behind the move.
Backlash from the Neighborhood
The proposed changes, however, have met with fierce resistance. British newspaper The Mirror quotes neighbor James Worthington, who dismissed the Beckhams' application as "an absolute joke." Worthington has submitted a 45-page objection outlining his concerns in detail, particularly criticizing the fact that work appears to have begun before official approval was granted.
The planned second driveway has also drawn criticism, with neighbors deeming it unnecessary. "I must strongly oppose this proposal," Joan Lane told the press.
The final decision now rests with Oxfordshire District Council, which will rule on the Beckhams' requests.
A Pattern of Conflict
This isn't the first time the high-profile couple has faced backlash in the Cotswolds. In the past, neighbors have lodged complaints over extensive renovations on the property. Most recently, controversy surrounded an artificial lake whose construction was approved but subject to strict conditions. Critics allege the Beckhams violated these regulations, and The Mirror reports that the district council is currently investigating the claims.
David and Victoria Beckham purchased the luxury estate in the Cotswolds in 2016 for around £6.5 million and have since carried out numerous renovations, reportedly increasing its value significantly.
The Cotswolds: A Celebrity Hotspot
The Cotswolds, a rolling rural landscape in southwestern England, is widely regarded as one of the country's most beautiful regions. With its gentle hills, lush meadows, and dry-stone walls, it embodies the classic, romantic vision of England.
Beyond its appeal to art and nature lovers, the area has long been a magnet for celebrities. Alongside the Beckhams, notable residents include Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, Eddie Redmayne, Ellen DeGeneres, Sting, as well as King Charles and Princess Anne, who also own properties there.
