Beau Willimon, the creative mind behind 'Andor' and 'Severance', shares his delight in shared creativity and collaboration in his roles.
In a chat with Variety, writer Beau Willimon opened up about his recent ventures in the TV realm. He's currently an executive producer on Apple TV+'s Severance and penned episodes for both seasons of Andor.
This creative powerhouse likened working on Star Wars to "being a session musician on someone's album." Collaborating with Andor architect Tony Gilroy extended back to the inception of Netflix's political drama House of Cards, when Gilroy joined as a consulting producer.
"I thought he was joking when he asked if I wanted to write a few episodes," Willimon shared." Gilroy wanted a fresh perspective, away from the franchise's lore, to craft a mature, human story."
Over six weeks, Willimon, Gilroy, and Gilroy's brother Dan Gilroy concocted the storyline for Andor. This writer's life saw a welcome change as he simply delivered scripts to his buddy, Tony Gilroy, his sole focus being the content's quality. About the latest season, Willimon expressed his pride saying, "I'm really proud of the second season."
The writer also shared his involvement in expanding the realm of Severance for Apple TV+'s second season. This wasn't a typical role for him, but he took up the post as an executive producer to provide additional assistance.
"The opportunities to work on projects where I don't know every detail excite me," Willimon said. "Severance"'s unique world and signature tone were alluring challenges he eagerly embraced, serving the story like any other team member.
Looking forward, Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, DC, and Doctor Who continue to dominate the sci-fi landscape. Stay tuned for more updates!
