Beau Willimon, the co-creator of Andor and Severance, shares the delight of working in partnership on two successful projects.
Casual Take:
Hey there! Beau Willimon's currently got his hands full with some cool projects – he's a producer on Apple TV+'s mind-bending sci-fi drama, Severance, and penned down a few episodes for the gripping second season of the Star Wars spin-off, Andor. It's like he's got multiple albums to play along on!
In a chat with Variety, he compared writing for Star Wars to being a session musician on someone's album. His collaboration with Andor creator Tony Gilroy kicked off on the political drama series House of Cards, with Gilroy joining forces as a consulting producer.
"Tony came to me and asked if I wanted to write a few episodes for Andor. I thought he was joking because Star Wars is my jam, but I'm not a die-hard fan," Willimon shared. "He said he wanted to tell a human story and a mature story, and that the less I knew about Star Wars, the better. Guess you could say he gave me the 'Don't think, just write' mantra!"
During the six-week story-breaking period, Willimon got to wear his writer’s hat and chill while his friend, Tony Gilroy, handled everything else. "I've never had it so easy. All I had to do was write some scripts for my mate Tony, and if he liked them, I was golden," Beau quipped.
As for the second season of Andor, Willimon seems pretty proud of it!
When it comes to Severance, he stepped in to lend a hand behind the scenes, focusing more on production. "I had no idea what I was getting myself into with Severance, but it was a unique experience. The show is like nothing I've ever seen, so I had to challenge myself to help bring the second season to life," he added.
Finally, Willimon shared that the experiences on Andor and Severance have sparked a newfound love for producing. "I like helping out with someone else's vision. Sometimes I can provide a fresh perspective or simply lend a hand where needed," he concluded.
