Bears in Belarus: Number of Killings Reported by the Ministry of Forestry
In a significant decision, President Alexander Lukashenko has granted permission for bear hunting to resume in Belarus starting from 2025, marking the end of a 20-year ban.
The bear hunting season will run from July 1 to December 31, 2025. A total of 47 bears can be hunted during this period, according to the latest announcement. This figure is higher than the 20 suggested by the Belarusian Public Association of Hunters.
The cost of bear hunting permits and related expenses have not been specified yet. However, it is known that the starting sum for auctions is Br2000, and the minimum permit fee for Belarusian citizens and those from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is Br500. For foreign citizens, the minimum fee is Br1000.
Each hunter must also pay at least Br5 for a ticket. The auction process for bear hunting permits involves multiple steps, with an example showing 40 steps.
As of mid-September, slightly over ten bears have been hunted. The populations of other game animals, such as deer, elk, and roe deer, are currently 50,000, 50,000, and 130,000 respectively.
Alexander Kozorez, head of the hunting management department of the Ministry of Forestry, stated that the increase in game animal populations has led to an increase in resource utilization. This decision is based on the gradual increase in the bear population, which currently stands at approximately 1,070.
It's worth noting that in 1994, only 27 elk were hunted, but today, around 9,000 are hunted annually. The prices of game meat or other products derived from hunted bears have not been disclosed.
Only those with more than three years of hunting experience are eligible to participate in the hunt from July 1 to December 31, 2025. This decision is expected to generate controversy and debate among conservationists and hunters alike.
