Officials Take Down Perpetrator in Shocking Sullivan's Island Hit-and-Run
After an afternoon of chaos, justice was served in Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, as a suspect was nabbed for intentionally running over three people, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by our site.
Justin Collin Adams, a 36-year-old Greenville resident, found himself behind bars following the gruesome incident that took place in the parking lot of Sunrise Presbyterian Church just before 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Three counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree aggravated assault were slapped on Adams's wrists, as per court records. The charges arrive after he allegedly targeted a parent and two children with his car, turning a tranquil afternoon into a state of panic.
The ordeal appeared to unfold in two phases, beginning with Adams allegedly taking control of his mother's vehicle at knifepoint, threatening to harm her. Before speeding away, he reportedly drove through a playground, hitting a 12-year-old child first, veering towards a sidewalk, and relentlessly pursuing the fleeing children, according to the affidavit.
In the playground area, he struck a teacher who got thrown over the car's hood after impact. The chase continued as Adams ran over a 10-year-old, pinning him beneath the vehicle when it collided with a curb and deployed the airbags.
Following the crash, Adams took off on foot, sparking an extensive manhunt. Authorities, including multiple aerial assets, marine units, and ground teams, scrambled to locate him. Agencies such as the FBI, NCIS, SLED, and DNR were enlisted to aid in the search and investigation.
Special Services Sgt. Matthew Storen of the Isle of Palms Police Department, who ultimately took Adams into custody, made it clear that the motive for the attack remains elusive.
"We had multiple aerial assets. We had marine units, boats. We knew he was last seen in the area of the marsh," Storen shared with our site. The search was carried out meticulously via helicopter, with local knowledge guiding the pilot as they conducted low passes.
Eventually, Adams was tracked down and apprehended by a combined team of K-9 units, SWAT team officers, and regular officers without incident. He was transported to Charleston County’s Al Cannon Detention Center and is set to return to court on June 13.
