Coastal Protection on Langeoog Kicks Off Fresh Beach Replenishment

Beach restoration initiatives kick off on Langeoog Island, involving sand reallocation to safeguard coastal regions. - Beach cleaning initiatives commence on Langeoog coastline with fresh sand washing.

Hey there! Let's talk about sand and waves, shall we? The picturesque island of Langeoog is preparing for a new round of beach replenishment, as coastal protection efforts kick off. The project has been delayed due to a rainy summer and autumn, and it's finally ready to make a comeback!

The Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation in Norden (district of Aurich) has announced the resumption of the project that started last summer in Pirolatal. Protecting the dunes is essential as they shield the town and the area used for drinking water extraction on the island.

Quantity of Sand Required

The plan is to safeguard the dunes with approximately 4.5 million wheelbarrow-loads of new sand, totalling around 450,000 cubic meters. As of the end of 2024, only about 270,000 cubic meters of sand have been added. The rest is on its way! The sand will be extracted from the seagap, the tidal channel between Langeoog and Baltrum, and transported to the beach using a special ship and pipeline. Once on the beach, bulldozers will distribute it evenly.

Frank Thorenz, head of the NLWKN operating site in Norden, stated that this project illustrates the narrow time-window for coastal protection projects on the East Frisian Islands. He also explained that ensuring the project doesn't collide with the main tourist season is a tough challenge. The storm season typically lasts from October to March, and coastal protection work is generally conducted during the summer half-year.

  2. The employment policy for the project should include provisions for the science-related jobs necessary for studies on the ecological consequences of the beach replenishment, such as positions in environmental-science research.
  3. For the project's success, it's essential to have a Community policy in place that harmonizes the interests of the locals, tourists, and the project team, ensuring a smooth execution during the storm season while minimalizing disruptions to the tourism industry.
