Grabbing a Steal at Baltrum's Beach Basket Auction

Who needs one-of-a-kind, high-priced beach baskets when you can snag a bargain at Baltrum's first-ever auction? That's right, folks! On this idyllic East Frisian island, discarded beach baskets were put up for grabs under a brilliant blue sky. Interested men and women from the mainland could score a steal, as auctioneer Jens Gaiser announced. For the lucky bidders, their newly-acquired beach chair was shipped, free of charge, to the Neßmersiel harbor (in the district of Aurich). Had they paid for transportation themselves, they'd have faced a hefty 50 euros per chair, according to Gaiser.
Truth be told, these discarded items had previously been sold at a fixed price for usage on the island during the season's end, Gaiser revealed. These seating furniture pieces had seen up to 15 seasons on Baltrum Beach. Over a hundred curious islanders and visitors inspected the beach baskets. Gaiser's team "is pleasantly surprised by the interest," they said.
A total of 36 beach baskets were put up for auction, and 28 of them found new homes, Gaiser disclosed. Eleven went to the mainland. The starting bid was 30 euros, with the highest price reaching 115 euros. Compared to prices on the mainland, these amounts are a steal! In the East Frisian town of Norddeich, beach baskets fetched between 250 and 450 euros in October 2024. Regular beach basket auctions also take place at other North Sea locations, like Langeoog and Sylt.
