Beach administrator specializing in self-care practices
The city of Leipzig is set to host an intriguing and immersive performance titled "Self Care Beach Command" at Schauspiel Leipzig - ag(o)ra. This interdisciplinary production by the theatre collective, fachbetrieb rita grechen, promises to be a captivating blend of music, light, and drama.
The performance takes place at the unique venue of Prora, a seaside resort on the east coast of the island of Rügen. Once planned by the National Socialists as a massive recreational facility for 20,000 members of the "Volksgemeinschaft", the complex was never fully completed due to the Second World War. After German reunification, private investors developed it into living and hotel facilities. Today, it serves as the backdrop for this thought-provoking production.
"Self Care Beach Command" explores Prora as a place of remembrance, seamlessly merging different time planes between 1936 and the present day. The collective, known for their music theatre shows, exhibitions, installations, and process-oriented works, invites audiences to reflect on the complex history of Prora while immersing themselves in the sensory experience of the performance.
The duration of the performance is 2 hours and 30 minutes, including an interval. It is performed in German, with Norwegian passages accompanied by German subtitles. The age recommendation for the show is 14, and content notes include National Socialist propaganda language, drug use, colonialist power imbalance, and a story about suicide.
Schauspiel Leipzig - ag(o)ra, where the performance takes place, is wheelchair-accessible and offers early boarding, with various kinds of seating available (beach chairs, towels, and chairs). However, attendees are advised to bring warmer clothing as the venue may be cool due to architectural conditions.
Performance dates for "Self Care Beach Command" are on Thursday, 23.10., at 19:30, and Friday, 24.10., with a Q&A session after the Friday performance. Don't miss this opportunity to experience a unique blend of history, art, and performance at one of Leipzig's most intriguing venues.
