BBL Club Shows Compassion with Fire Engine Donation!
Embracing victory beyond the court!
Despite suffering losses against Oldenburg and Vechta, the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim, a renowned basketball club, has a reason to rejoice. Known for their exceptional sportsmanship, they have shown their compassionate side by organizing an aid convoy to Ukraine. The relief efforts involve three unusual, yet desperately needed, items: fire engines.
Fritz Wieler, the club's deputy head for 20 years and a shareholder, is deeply moved by the Ukrainian crisis. "It was essential for me to contribute. The plight of Ukraine should never be forgotten. We aim to continue assisting the people," says Wieler.
On a recent Sunday, the convoy embarked on its journey eastward. In the cargo: an ambulance - a kind gift from Belgium via a European fire department portal, and two fire engines - one sourced from Wiesbaden for a ridiculously low price and another bought from their hometown, Crailsheim.
"This time, we were fortunate to receive an ambulance as a gift and managed to procure fire engines at particularly affordable rates," shares Wieler.
Basketball: Merlins Crailsheim's Compassionate Relief Effort
The convoy's destination: Bilgoraj, a Polish town bordering Ukraine. The vehicles, loaded with relief supplies, will be handed over to the mayor of the town. Afterward, they'll be shipped to Novovolynsk, 40 kilometers away from Bilgoraj. "The town has had to relinquish many vehicles due to the war. Now it needs rescue and firefighting vehicles," explains Wieler.
In 2022, three fire engines, funded by the club's donation account, were sent to Ukraine. This substantial contribution was made possible by the club's sponsors and loyal fans. "We received generous donations. Our main sponsors initiated this, and all other sponsors and fans responded enthusiastically. Elementary school students even collected 3,000 euros for Ukraine Relief," shares Wieler.
The Hakro Merlins, reputed for their basket-ball prowess in the BBL, continue to demonstrate generosity beyond the court. Their selfless acts, including last year's donation of three fire engines to Ukraine, now extended to three more, truly resonate with the essence of team spirit and human compassion.
