BBC unveils sneak peek of Call The Midwife Christmas special, revealing a concerning indication
The BBC has confirmed that a prequel series for the hit drama Call The Midwife is in the works, set during World War Two. This exciting announcement comes alongside the commissioning of a sixteenth instalment of the programme, which will follow the main show into 1971.
The cast for the prequel series has not been confirmed yet, but fans can look forward to rejoining familiar faces such as Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), GP Dr Turner (Stephen McCann), Sister Hilda (Fenella Woolgar), nurse Shelagh Turner (Laura Main), Handyman Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi), and his wife Violet (Anabelle Apsion), who were all seen in the recently released cast picture for the Hong Kong-set Christmas special.
However, a few notable absences have sparked speculation among fans. Nurses Trixie Aylward (Helen George), Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry), and Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey) were not present in the Hong Kong cast picture. The reason for their absence remains unclear, with possibilities ranging from storyline reasons, scheduling conflicts, or filming logistics.
The Christmas special will run in advance of the fifteenth series, set to begin in early 2026, and will feature a plot that splits between Poplar (East London) and Hong Kong. While the younger midwives help the local community alone, senior members of the Nonnatus House staff will head to Hong Kong on a mercy mission in the next series.
The special episode will tackle issues such as the women's liberation movement, with several ladies burning their bras outside of the convent, and will delve into stories related to premature birth, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis, and slavery.
Call The Midwife, the UK's biggest drama series, continues to captivate audiences, averaging 7.8 million viewers this year and drawing in 8.9 million spectators for the 2024 Christmas special. The show has also garnered several awards, including National Television Awards for Best Female Drama Performance and Best Period Drama.
BBC boss Lindsay Salt has described Call The Midwife as a 'jewel in the BBC's crown', and fans can look forward to more heartwarming and thought-provoking episodes in the future, with the prequel series and next series of the main show promising to delve into compelling stories from the past and present.
